Vivi Film

Description

Vivi Film is an independent Brussels-based production company founded in 1990 by Viviane Vanfleteren.

After producing mainly live-action shorts, features, and documentaries, Vivi Film entered the animation co-production scene with THE TRIPLETS OF BELLEVILLE, which released in 2003. The film premiered at the Cannes Film Festival, was selected for numerous prestigious competitions, won the César Award for Best Animated Film, received BAFTA and Academy Award nominations, and was sold in over 50 countries worldwide.

Building on this success, Vivi Film co-produced THE SECRET OF KELLS, which released in 2009. This film was nominated for the European Film Awards, the Annie Awards, and the Oscars, and reached international audiences through broad distribution. In recognition of these achievements, Vivi Film and its co-producers were awarded Best European Producer at Cartoon Movie.

These successes positioned Vivi Film as a pioneering Belgian animation producer with a clear international outlook.

Building on its reputation as an Oscar-nominated production company, Vivi Film has established itself as a reliable and valued co-production partner. The company has collaborated on numerous animated features and series with long-standing partners in France, the Netherlands, Ireland, Germany, Norway, and Iceland. These collaborations are grounded in mutual trust, artistic excellence, and shared values of creative innovation.

Recognising the need for greater sustainability and creative control in a competitive market, Vivi Film began integrating production capacities within its own structure. This led to the creation of Studio Souza in 2016, co-founded with Veerle Appelmans, who had joined Vivi Film as a producer in 2009.

In 2024, Vivi Film further consolidated its structure. Ownership is now shared between Viviane Vanfleteren, Veerle Appelmans, and Daan Van den Eeden, the latter also founder of Creature, a Ghent-based studio established in 2021. Vivi Film subsequently acquired Studio Souza, Creature, and Bits N Pencils, integrating their creative and technical expertise into a unified group.

This new structure positions Vivi Film as a vertically integrated hub within the Belgian animation landscape, combining creative development and production under one financial and administrative framework. Productions are managed by Vivi Film, with executive production carried out at Studio Souza (Brussels) and Creature (Ghent).

Vivi Film’s editorial line focuses on original stories with strong visual and emotional impact, designed for international audiences. The company has a heart for authentic imagery and character-driven narratives, selecting high-quality projects that combine arthouse sensibilities with the ambition to reach a broad audience. It is particularly drawn to author-driven animation that blends poetic storytelling with universal themes — exploring identity, belonging, and human connection — while remaining accessible to family and young adult audiences.

Today, Vivi Film is involved in a variety of projects as initiator, producer, and co-producer. Vivi Film accompanies each production through its different stages from development and financing to production and distribution.
