The historic heart of Brussels has again this year been nominated for the Location Award. This prize is awarded by the European Film Commissions Network to the best European film or TV series location, according to public votes until 30 December.
It spreads from the “boulevards” to the old quays... The district that one could call "royal", and the entire historic heart of Brussels, hosts many film shoots every year. From feature films and TV series to commercials, including a video clip by the rapper Orelsan with Stromae! In 2018, however, the most memorable filming was the BBC mini-series "Les Misérables". With nearly 350 actors and technicians, 28 days in Brussels, and several dozens technical vehicles, this ambitious project has transformed the heritage well-known to the inhabitants of Brussels into a bona fide "19th century Paris "...
This district, with its (neo-)Renaissance, Baroque and mainly neo-classical heritage, may seem too disparate to the inhabitants, but it has in fact become the favourite set for a multitude of directors. Many prestigious buildings still stand there, such as the Palace of the Academies, the Cercle Gaulois and the entire Martyrs' Square. You can also walk its cobbled streets and alleys, and stumble upon old churches (the one at the Béguinage features prominently in the "Les Misérables" series). The Park of Brussels is surrounded by splendid buildings in typical 18th and 19th century architecture, with the Belgian Parliament and the Royal Palace on either side. Let’s not forget the Place Royale, the Palace of Egmont and its park, or the Sablon among the essential sites of this historic centre.
EUFNC Best Location Award
For the third consecutive year, the European Film Commissions Network (EUFCN) will award a prize for the best European set for the film and television industry. During the first phase, each member commission was able to apply for a location that hosted a film shoot in 2018. A selection of 10 locations is submitted to the public vote until 30 December 2019.
