Synopsis

This documentary on Étienne Davignon is an analysis of the last 50 years of European history, from decolonisation through the Cold War right up to the creation of Europe from the privileged viewpoint of one its key players. It features interviews with the most important people in world politics from the last 50 years about the greatest challenges and the most critical questions concerning Europe, including globalisation and its consequences, which have shaped our lives today. Étienne is one of the greats of the Belgian industrial and political world, one of its most enigmatic yet influential characters, as well as one of the most secretive men in Belgian and European business and politics of this century. For the first time, Étienne Davignon, 85, talks about his career, the truth behind various heroic tales, and about his life. It is a crucial account 'of everything that was not written down' about the history of our country, Belgium. As he says today, "I didn't work tirelessly for 60 years just to keep my mouth shut now." This is no idealised biography. It's a film about power.
