Mady’s van carves a path through the Brussels night. The city has been brought to a fever pitch by the harsh police response to a Black Lives Matter protest in memory of Souleymane Diallo, killed on a previous night as a result of police brutality.
A young Belgian of African origin, Mady is a criminology student by day and a locksmith by night. Heading to the home of a certain Claire who’s misplaced the keys to her flat, he turns off a radio news report on the escalating tensions at the protest and hums along to a Petula Clark CD from the 1960s. Mady’s life is much like a long night that has to be endured, dulled by the oppressive racism he encounters every day.
